What do I learn from OPK??

What is OPK? Orientasi Pengenalan Kampus is an activity in which freshmen are introduced to their new university. Some universities call it OSPEK and it is the most horrifying moment of a freshmen life. The activities in OPK FEUI—which I still remember—are talk show, seminar, tour around the campus, and homework. Lots and lots of homework.
After OPK, freshmen are expected to have certain skill and knowledge of how college is different in so many ways than high school. This is what I learn from OPK:
1. Curiosity can kill.
Or at least get you yelled at. If you get a heart attack for that, then it really kills you. How is it possible? In early OPK morning at around 6-7 am (can’t really tell because we weren’t allowed to bring any form of watch including wrist-watch), we were told—or yelled—to stand in lines. The senior then checked our belongings looking for anything not-on-the-list. Some lucky freshmen can sit down if they’re pronounced clear, other weren’t so lucky. Anything as simple as safety pin can cause a great deal of punishment. Imagine what scissors can bring. When a freshman made a mistake, seniors would yell at him/her so loud that everyone could hear their furious voice. Hearing such tone would certainly boost up our curiosity to find out what kind of mistake could cause it and who the hell did it. Spontaneously, we turned our head around and try to get a peek on the scene. Just a second later another senior not far from us yelled even louder telling us to keep our head straight, eyes to the front, and no sightseeing.
“Gak usah tolah-toleh!!”
“Apa lo liat-liat??!! Seneng lo liat temennya dimarahin??!!”
“Gak ada yang liat bawah! Mainan tanah! Gak ada yang nglamun! Pandangan focus ke depan!!!”

After that more seniors kept their eyes on us and quickly yelled to anyone who dares to move a finger. It was so hard to breath, let alone feels curious about anything.

2. Life is all about luck. Say there are two persons with the same nametag, same homework, same bag, same shoes, same clothes, same answers to every question, but different senior inspector, then the two of them will probably get different title. There were four title in OPK:
TP (Tanpa Pelanggaran),
PR (Pelanggaran Ringan),
PS (Pelanggaran Sedang),
PB (Pelanggaran Berat)
,
And the most horrifying title…
SC (Special Case)
However, when someone is really unlucky, he/she could get SCL (Special Case Luarbiasa).
Luckily I got TP in two days, my friend Tami weren’t so lucky. With the same everything with me, she got PR in the second day. Clearly luck plays an important role in this life.

3. Do not blink more than five seconds during a seminar—or in the future event—during a class. While the seminar and talk show took place, a senior carried a high-tech camera everywhere taking pictures of the freshmen especially the one who is closing their eyes. Try to blink more than five seconds then that senior will point his camera to you, accusing you of falling asleep. Saying, “Hey, I wasn’t sleeping. It was just a long blink.” wouldn't help that much

4. Walking is ineffective, so run! Run everywhere, fasting is not the reason to walk. We even run when doing the tour. Once you create a big gap with the person in front of you, the yelling team will be ready:
“Tempel temennya!!”
“Lari lo!!”
“Cepet!! Cepet!!”

I wonder where they find the power to yell every time they have the chance.

Of course that’s not what I should’ve learned from OPK. If I was a kind of person who always tries to find a bright side out of everything, this is what I would have learned:
1. College live isn’t easy, so you should try your best even if it means you can hardly sleep at night.
2. Help your friends in every problem they have. Even if it means you will get yelled at. =______=
3. Don’t be afraid when you’re right and deal with the consequences when you’re wrong.
4. Plagiarism is wrong
and that is the seed of corruption.
5. Appreciate the person talking in front of you. Whoever they are, especially if they’re not just anyone but someone important.
6. Later in live you will find other activities beside classes. Thus, you are expected to be able to organize your time and be responsible for your action.

That’s just a few things I can learn from OPK. They said there are more but I can’t really hear it with all the yelling buzzing in my ears.
